Days 3 + 4: Still the Short Version

Written By: achangeofends - Jan• 19•11

I always forget how sleep deprived I am during the Australian Open, so it appears I’ve missed a couple days of recapping. Anyway, last night all I could muster was an article on my hatred of Venus’ dress, so I figured I would at least make an attempt at discussing tennis today. First off, last night (or morning or whatever) Roger Federer battled Gilles Simon to make his way into the 3rd round. Not big news right? But, it went to five sets. The two men had met twice before (granted it was when Gilles was still great) and Gilles had won both matches. It was almost laughable to think that Fed would go out to Simon in Round 2, particularly while he was steamrolling through sets 1 and 2. Then, Gilles pulled out some ’08 style tennis and won the next 2 sets. Overall, impressive play from Simon, who’s a much better player than his ranking suggests. I look forward to a day when we’ll see these two meet in quarterfinals instead of the 2nd Round.

While Rafa and Kim had no trouble, Day 4 action we saw some of our first real upsets. The highest seed to exit the tournament thus far was Jelena Jankovic (7) who lost to Peng Shuai of China in straight sets. Am I shocked? No. We’ve seen former number ones Dinara Safina and Ana Ivanovic absolutely plummet through the rankings, so why should JJ be any different? Plus, she came into the tournament with a 6 match losing streak. It’s unfortunate she wasn’t in the best form today because she had an extremely winnable section of the draw and could’ve gone deep into the second week if she was playing her best tennis.

Next, this tall Canadian kid named Milos Raonic dismissed one of my all time favs, Michael Lloda. Honestly, Mika wasn’t quite as gracious about it as he could have been, but it’s ok. Raonic’s serve is massive though. That kid has a real future.

The hits just kept on coming when Feli Lopez crashed out to Bernard Tomic. Tell me he doesn’t look like a tool in this photo. If you want to wear sunnies, take your cue from Tipsarevic. He makes it cool. I’ve got to say, Feli could’ve taken the loss a little better. He pretty much gave up on the 3rd set with a real bad attitude. I fully expect some angry tweets tonight. Also, as I stated on twitter earlier today, the man-bun is not a good hairdo. If your hair is too long to leave down, cut it…or worst case, put it in a ponytail. No buns. I’m talking to you too Marcos Baghdatis. Oh yeah, Tomic’s reward for his awesome feat? A 3rd round meeting with Rafa. That should put him in his place. Rafa will be visiting the aquarium in preparation for their match.

Nadia Petrova easily won her match against Alicia Molik looking much like a Cirque de Soleil performer in a frilly blue and purple number. Marin Cilic is also through.

As I write this, Mikhail Youzhny is about to take the fifth set and the match against Kavcic so he seems alright. More importantly, Bepa is already down two breaks (has actually been broken 3 times, but got 1 back) in the first set against Bojana Jovanovski. Ok, now she’s lost the first set 6-2. I don’t like this. Hopefully Vera Z will come alive soon. I have a feeling I’ll be discussing this in my recap tomorrow.

This is my quick update. Please keep checking me out on twitter for some even more candid match narratives. Click the button guys, click the button.
